Sorry to bombard you with egg pictures, but this one’s better than that last one.
Two fresh eggs.
Something I didn’t know until a few years ago is that different chicken breeds lay different coloured eggs. These two were laid by our Black Stars, who are a modern breed of chicken specifically bred to be good egg producers. Apparently they’re not great meat-birds.
This picture was a few weeks ago; now our other two pullets, the Rhode Island Reds, have started to lay. If you want to eat something at our house, your options are eggs, eggs, eggs with eggs, or eggs.
The beginning of the best season for eating; in a few short weeks there’ll be blackberries, wild blueberries, tomatoes, cukes, and all good things.
Hops growing up through tulips.
When I worked at Lang Pioneer Village, there was a hops plant (sadly gone, now) that grew up outside the Keene Hotel’s kitchen door. I loved it, and so I got one of my own.
Hops are one of those plants that grow without any help, and they climb fast, and they wrap around one another and cling to other plants for support. I haven’t ever used the hops, but I probably should.
Chickens in the new pen; they’re really loving all of this open space.
Mom and Sammi had this mostly built when I came home from a meeting the other night, which is awesome, because I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to even give it much thought.
